Conversations with Lostboycrow: Feels Like Home Tour

Concert Reviews, Conversations with Lostboycrow, Indie Artists, Interviews, Photos, Tours, Uncategorized

February 1, 2017

This is the first part of a series of conversations with Lostboycrow. I first spoke to him in 2015 (read here). This series is dedicated to following his path since then and into the future.

Words and photos by Jenna Million.

A cold night in early December, a small line forms outside of a dimly lit hole-in-the-wall venue in the heart of San Francisco. Inside is a surprisingly drafty bar with a small stage, home to many up-and-coming touring artists. The Feels Like Home tour featuring Lostboycrow and flor claimed that stage on December 6.

A shy but welcoming crowd watched at a safe distance when flor, Los Angeles-based alternative band and friends of Lostboycrow, took the stage for the first half of the co-headlining show. Flor serenaded the audience with soft energetic melodies and sugary synthesizer, brought to life by guitar solos and underlaid with sweet bass and percussion.

In the middle of the set, Lostboycrow joined flor on stage to perform “Still Standing Still,” a collaboration between the two artists that lends itself to the creativity behind both flor and Lostboycrow, becoming something entirely different than each artist’s sound. Lostboycrow says this tour was a long time coming for both artists.

“Lostboycrow was birthed so much around flor – them getting started and us bouncing ideas off of each other,” he says. “We’ve always kind of been side by side, even with the blogs and the hype and now with the next step as well.”

Based in Los Angeles, Lostboycrow says he’s been able to build a special, welcoming audience at his L.A. shows over the past few years, but has reached new audiences after touring for the first time with VÉRITÉ in May 2016.

Closing the night, Lostboycrow gave a heartfelt performance that showcased his talent and versatility as a singer. I was impressed to hear Lostboycrow had every deep, sultry croon and falsetto melody in the pocket. His electronic-heavy songs were well fitted to the live setting with a back up band adding support on guitar, keys and drums. Zach Grace, front man of flor, also joined Lostboycrow on stage for a unique acoustic rendition of Lostboycrow’s “The Lost Boy” and Coldplay’s “Warning Sign.”

Lostboycrow details the special experience of the Feels Like Home Tour:

Touring with your best friends is just exactly that. It was fun, incredibly productive, helpful, and so meaningful for me to be able to bring Zach up on stage every night, and for me to be able to walk up on that stage with them every night and sing and look back at my best friend in the world, [Kyle Hill] playing drums. We grew up in the suburbs of Portland, [Oregon] together and were in awful metal bands together. It was pretty surreal. To play to a packed out crowd in Portland and see people from way back in the day, it meant a lot… I feel very lucky to have done that and I hope it makes sense to do it again some day.

Lostboycrow says playing his music live has been as much of a journey as recording in the studio. He says, “It’s really cool to be surrounded by such incredible musicians… and take these songs that I love and pour myself into and be like ‘Okay how can we reimagine these and make these something to really behold live?’”

Artist Tour Spotlight: Vinyl Theatre

New Music, Pop Punk Artists, Tours

March 27, 2015

Magic Man’s spring tour is coming to Austin, TX on March 31, and they are bringing Vinyl Theatre and Great Good Fine Ok with them. The lineup is sure to make for a great show. Find out more about Vinyl Theatre and look for more coverage and photos coming next week!

Vinyl Theatre is an upcoming pop punk band from Milwaukee, WI. Taking a unique approach, Vinyl Theater released their album not on one day, but released individual tracks on SoundCloud over a period of weeks. Since fans would play the song non-stop, this strategy allowed each song to trend separately and reach bigger audiences.

The band bonded over their love for music and hope to share the same with their fans. Their sound is a mix of synth and electric guitar riffs accompanied by punk drum lines and sing-a-long lyrics.

Recommended Songs: If You Say So, Stay

The group toured with twenty one pilots last fall, are currently on tour with Magic Man, and will be joining Smallpools this spring. See a list of tour dates below.

Ellie Goulding ‘Can’t Seem to Stop’ – New Video and More

New Music, Pop Artists, Tours, Uncategorized

January 6, 2014

Rising star of the pop genre, Ellie Goulding will start the new year with a world tour beginning in Europe and stretching to the UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. All tour dates can be found here.

This came after the August re-release of her sophomore album Halcyon as Halcyon Days, featuring new songs, remixes and a cover or two. Many of the new songs hold a heavier electronic-pop influence, opening a new door for the artist.

However, she is no stranger to the world of pop hits. In 2012, “Lights” sold over four million copies in the US alone. That sweet soft-pop girl has turned into a fierce and spirited electro-pop goddess.

“Burn” was the first single from Halcyon Days which propelled her success after becoming No. 1 for three consecutive weeks last July.

“Probably the most poppy song I’ve released. But it’s all me,” Goulding tells The Guardian in an interview. “I wanted to release Burn, I loved it, even if it is a vague sentiment. I think it’s a truly great song.”

As of Jan. 5, Goulding has announced “Goodness Gracious,” another wildly enthralling dance- and sing-along-song, as her next single from Halcyon Days along with the release of the music video.

In a “Behind the Scenes” interview, Goulding discusses the meaning of the song, writing with Nate Ruess of FUN. and making the video, which can be viewed here.

As if that wasn’t enough, Halcyon went No. 1 in the UK, an astonishing 65 weeks after its release.

After a big year of success in 2013, it appears that 2014 could be even bigger for this pop queen.

Concert Preview: Atlas Genius

Concert Reviews, Indie Artists, Tours, Uncategorized

October 19, 2013

A Note From the Editor

Hey y’all! Atlas Genius is playing at Stubb’s on October 23, and I’ll be attending the show to take photos of the band. I’ve been a fan of Atlas Genius for awhile, and I first saw them in April at Emo’s East with The Neighbourhood. It has been several months, so I am very excited to see how the band has improved as performers and musicians.

I’ll be writing a review of the concert to go along with my photos, so check back by the end of next week to read about it and see the photos. For those of you who may not know Atlas Genius, here is a little bit about them…

Meet the Band

Atlas Genius is a brother-duo band hailing from Adelaide, Australia. The band has had increasing success in the United States and United Kingdom since the release of their debut single “Trojans” on May 4, 2011.

By 2012, the band was signed to Warner Bros. Records, and on Feb. 9, 2013, Atlas Genius released their first album When It Was Now.

The band has toured the US several times, and even performed at festivals this summer including Lollapalooza and Sasquatch! Festival. They are currently on their headliner tour in the US and will tour the UK this November with Imagine Dragons. A full list of dates can be found at AtlasGenius.com.

The official music video for “If So” was released on October 10.

8123 Tour Photos and Videos

Hey guys! Photos of The Maine and This Century are now posted on my flickr page with photos of Brighten and A Rocket to the Moon on their way, so check back for those soon. Below is a video of The Maine playing “We’ll All Be” live in Austin with the other 8123 tour bands. Keep your eyes peeled for more videos of your favorite songs.

I love The Maine because they are an ever-progressing and evolving band. They took their music places I never thought they would be able to. And every time I go to their shows they are increasingly better performers and musicians. The Maine really is growing into a rock and roll band.

Debut Music: Smallpools EP

Album Reviews, Indie Artists, New Music, Tours, Uncategorized

July 16, 2013

smallools_ep

Smallpools released their first four track EP on July 16 and thus began their world domination of the indie pop music scene.

Smallpools also embarked on their first tour with San Cisco on July 15. Scroll to the bottom for tour dates.

LA based band Smallpools popped out of nowhere in May when they released their single “Dreaming.” The song immediately received attention from online listeners and airplay from ALT Nation on Sirius XM.

“Dreaming” is one of those songs you hear and immediately know it’s going to be a hit.  Energizing combinations of guitar and synth give the song life while the lyrics give off a go with the flow vibe. It makes for a catchy and addictive dance song that you want to leave on repeat.

In the second song “Mason Jars,” Smallpools experiments balancing gang vocals and twangy guitar melodies for folk-like choruses with classic indie rock versus, incorporating syncopated drumming and clear guitar progressions. At times the song sounds like two separate songs that were smashed together to make a dizzying evolution of sound, yet Smallpools manages to pull it off smoothly.

“Over & Over” leads away from their synth-driven dance single. This is my favorite track on the EP because of the story line lyrics and the snappy guitar that lays somewhere between Vampire Weekend and Two Door Cinema Club. The chorus “I want to call you mine/ and never let you down/ I want to feel this ride over and over” creates a feeling of carefree endless summer nights spent doing crazy things with your favorite people.

“No Story Time” proves the extent of Smallpools’ talent. I hear elements of bands like Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, Atlas Genius, and Two Door Cinema Club, but it doesn’t feel like anything other than Smallpools. The writing and production of this song feels like a band who has been doing this for awhile, not debuting their EP, and for that reason I see this band staying around for a long time.

WARPED TOUR SURVIVAL GUIDE

Festivals, Tours, Uncategorized

July 7, 2013

warped-13

It’s finally summertime and Warped Tour time. This all day chaos of back to back bands is a great time, if you know how to handle it. If you’re a new comer, Warped Tour can be a lot to take in, so I’ve put together a survival guide to make sure you have the best time of your life.

What to Wear
  • Comfortable shoes. I suggest wearing close-toed shoes that can get trashed. You may be walking through mud and puddles if it’s raining but also, quite frankly, vomit. It’s not the most pleasant part of Warped Tour but sick people  will throw up wherever they have to.
  • Light-weight clothes. This is probably a given for most people. Dress comfortable. Dress for the weather. Being in the heat all day is not easy and no one wants to get sick and miss the fun.

Breathe Carolina

What to Bring
  • A friend.  Watch out for each other in the crowd and make sure you have enough sunscreen, water, and food.
  • A small light-weight backpack to carry your merch and other necessities in. Last year I even used mine as a place to collect signatures from all of the bands I met!
  • Sunscreen. Don’t be the person who comes home looking like a lobster or the person who paints their body with finger paint but forgets the sunscreen at home. (Trust me, you will save yourself from several weeks of embarrassment.)
  • Sunglasses
  • One factory sealed water bottle (up to one liter). This will save you from spending money on overpriced bottles of water, plus there is a free Klean Kanteen water refill station.
  • Back-up Cell Phone Battery. If you’re always using twitter or even taking pictures all day, the battery pack can be a life saver, especially when it’s time to go and you have to find your friend who wandered off.
  • A battery-powered, hand-held fan. You will be thankful you brought it right about the time you’re waiting in line for your favorite band’s autograph and there’s no escaping the heat.
  • Snacks. Eating at Warped Tour is always hard if you eat healthy or are vegan/ vegetarian. Usually the best options you can find are pizza or hot dogs, so it’s a good idea to bring trail mix or a sliced apple.
  • Ear Plugs. Yes, I know, you may be thinking that ear plugs are for older people, but when you’ve been blasted by loud music all day long, they may come in handy once or twice.
  • Tylenol
  • Money. Bring more than you expect to spend. You don’t want to run out of money for water or food because you bought to much merch.
  • Umbrella. Not only will it save you from rain, but it also works as a cover from the sun.

You Me At Six Signing

What to Do
  •  Make your schedule. The set times change every day, so the only one way to know what time your bands will be playing is to find the giant inflatable wall that has all the times and stages listed on it.
  • Visit the tents. In addition to merch, there are also fun activities like finger paint and dance contest. Non-profit organizations typically have games designed for the fans to have fun and win free items while learning important facts. Some organizations even give away VIP backstage passes.
  • Signings. The best way to know where and when you favorite band is signing is to follow them on twitter for updates.
  • Find shade and chill. Take a  break from the sun whether it’s under a tree or in an air-conditioned warehouse like the one that was open at the show I went to last year.

Out of all of these, the most important thing is to have fun. If you’re going to Warped Tour for the first time, it can be intimidating, but it is a blast if you stick with your buddy and stay hydrated! For more information on Warped Tour you can visit their FAQ page.
