As you may or may not have read, I went to the Atlas Genius concert at Stubb’s on Oct. 23 to take photos, so here they are!

Atlas Genius is actually quite a talented band. Their live sound was almost better than the record, which is a rare occurrence in live music. Everything about the experience was chill but at the same time energetic. There was no pressure to perform or hype up the crowd. It was what it was. It was natural and free-flowing. They also had a very cool lights shows with oranges and reds to blues and greens. Atlas Genius is definitely worth seeing if you get the chance.

Concert Preview: Atlas Genius

A Note From the Editor

Hey y’all! Atlas Genius is playing at Stubb’s on October 23, and I’ll be attending the show to take photos of the band. I’ve been a fan of Atlas Genius for awhile, and I first saw them in April at Emo’s East with The Neighbourhood. It has been several months, so I am very excited to see how the band has improved as performers and musicians.

I’ll be writing a review of the concert to go along with my photos, so check back by the end of next week to read about it and see the photos. For those of you who may not know Atlas Genius, here is a little bit about them…

Meet the Band

Atlas Genius is a brother-duo band hailing from Adelaide, Australia. The band has had increasing success in the United States and United Kingdom since the release of their debut single “Trojans” on May 4, 2011.

By 2012, the band was signed to Warner Bros. Records, and on Feb. 9, 2013, Atlas Genius released their first album When It Was Now.

The band has toured the US several times, and even performed at festivals this summer including Lollapalooza and Sasquatch! Festival. They are currently on their headliner tour in the US and will tour the UK this November with Imagine Dragons. A full list of dates can be found at AtlasGenius.com.

The official music video for “If So” was released on October 10.

The 1975: Anything But The 70s

Album Reviews, Indie Artists, New Music, Uncategorized

October 15, 2013

The1975photo

The Band

Ask anyone about UK band The 1975 and you’ll hear the same thing from everyone: they are going to be the next big thing in music.

They’ve already taken over the alternative genre, and now the world.

The 1975 has been so successful in the UK that they played iTunes festival on September 8. In the United States, they made their first appearance at SXSW 2013 in Austin, TX. Since then they toured parts of the US in support of The Neighbourhood. This coming fall they are touring parts of the US again as a headliner act. (Tour dates here.)

The 1975 released their first self-titled album on September 3. It features popular songs “Chocolate” and “The City.” But the real surprise is the rest of their album, because their sound is so unique to them. It’s unlike anything else in today’s indie genre.

The Music

A prominent part of their basis takes sounds from 80s R&B artists and rock bands, which were a heavy influence in their teen years, and can be heard throughout the album.

Mathew “Matty” Healy, lead vocalists, described the album as a part of their life. The songs reflect a certain time in their lives.

Several of the songs feature lyrics that are actually a conversation between people. This is a style of writing that surprised me because I didn’t realize the frequency of these lyrics and the manner in which they were written, which is very subtle.

Title tack and intro “The 1975,” along with “An Encounter” and “12” are lyric-less instrumental riffs that, to me, feel like an idea in time, a happening, a soundtrack. They stand on their own without relying on the album to carry them, while at the same time connecting the songs on the album.

“Menswear” could also be considered alongside these songs, but lyrics surprisingly enter half way through the song. The lyrics, though, are solely a conversation stopped in time, which reinforces the idea that these songs were written about specific events in their lives.

‘Well I only brought 3, what you lookin’ at me for?’/ She’s dressed in white and putting off crying/ ‘Well you’re the best man, so what’s the plan?/ Why don’t you talk to Matty about it?’

https://soundcloud.com/the1975/menswear

Another point about their lyrics that impressed me is that they have a strange elegance about them. The obscure vocabulary Matty includes in the lyrics is unforseen, when considering the simple and shallow lyrics of some of today’s artists and bands.

Talk!” features the lyrics “Passing grammatical mistakes/ Totally wrecked and polemic in the way he talks/ Vocal sabbatical – delayed by churning out the same,” which caused me to do a double-take rewind of the song upon first listen.

Being from England, Matty has a very distinct accent when he sings (unlike other English artists who sing with an American accents). Although the lyrics are utterly unrecognizable at times, it does not discredit the band. Instead, it’s another factor that gives them personality.

(Side note: I highly suggest listening to the album while reading along with a lyric booklet or with the Internet’s aid. From personal experience, I can tell you that  the songs have different and deeper meaning when you can understand the lyrics.)

The Real Deal

In most ways, the album defines The 1975 and gives them a style to call their own. There are more of the poppy guitar pickups and melodies, like in their first radio hit “Chocolate.” But that is not to say all the album sounds like one 30 minute song. Some of their songs have melodic or harmonic ideas in common, which connect the album and gives is continuity.

My only objection is to “Is There Somebody Who Can Watch You.” The slow and raw piano strip-down, accompanied by Matty’s vocals, closes the album with emotion. However, I wish that the song had more of a structure to it, because it feels almost free-styled. This is not to discredit the song, but I think for this album, a stronger statement would have worked better to close the album.

I love the raw passion in the album. The 1975 is not trying or pretending to be anything they’re not. This album is how they felt and how they were in a certain time and place in their lives when they wrote these songs. They’re not seeking acceptance from any record label or audience. There’s no management telling them how to sound or how to look. They are where they are today from simply being themselves, and their talent and innovative musicianship definitely doesn’t hinder them.

Hey guys! Photos of The Maine and This Century are now posted on my flickr page with photos of Brighten and A Rocket to the Moon on their way, so check back for those soon. Below is a video of The Maine playing “We’ll All Be” live in Austin with the other 8123 tour bands. Keep your eyes peeled for more videos of your favorite songs.

I love The Maine because they are an ever-progressing and evolving band. They took their music places I never thought they would be able to. And every time I go to their shows they are increasingly better performers and musicians. The Maine really is growing into a rock and roll band.

Debut Music: Smallpools EP

Album Reviews, Indie Artists, New Music, Tours, Uncategorized

July 16, 2013

smallools_ep

Smallpools released their first four track EP on July 16 and thus began their world domination of the indie pop music scene.

Smallpools also embarked on their first tour with San Cisco on July 15. Scroll to the bottom for tour dates.

LA based band Smallpools popped out of nowhere in May when they released their single “Dreaming.” The song immediately received attention from online listeners and airplay from ALT Nation on Sirius XM.

“Dreaming” is one of those songs you hear and immediately know it’s going to be a hit.  Energizing combinations of guitar and synth give the song life while the lyrics give off a go with the flow vibe. It makes for a catchy and addictive dance song that you want to leave on repeat.

In the second song “Mason Jars,” Smallpools experiments balancing gang vocals and twangy guitar melodies for folk-like choruses with classic indie rock versus, incorporating syncopated drumming and clear guitar progressions. At times the song sounds like two separate songs that were smashed together to make a dizzying evolution of sound, yet Smallpools manages to pull it off smoothly.

“Over & Over” leads away from their synth-driven dance single. This is my favorite track on the EP because of the story line lyrics and the snappy guitar that lays somewhere between Vampire Weekend and Two Door Cinema Club. The chorus “I want to call you mine/ and never let you down/ I want to feel this ride over and over” creates a feeling of carefree endless summer nights spent doing crazy things with your favorite people.

“No Story Time” proves the extent of Smallpools’ talent. I hear elements of bands like Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, Atlas Genius, and Two Door Cinema Club, but it doesn’t feel like anything other than Smallpools. The writing and production of this song feels like a band who has been doing this for awhile, not debuting their EP, and for that reason I see this band staying around for a long time.

Of Monsters and Men Photos

Concert Reviews, Indie Artists, Photos, Uncategorized

June 8, 2013

Icelandic indie-folk/pop band Of Monsters and Men made a stop in Austin for their U.S. tour, so I went down to Stubb’s to see them and take photos. I really only knew the band for their hit “Little Talks,” but I was quite surprised by their live performance. They were all smiles the whole time and so was the crowd- their music is contagiously happy. I can see why their show sold out so soon.

Their live sound is just as full as the album because, in addition to the normal band instruments, they play piano, organ, accordion, trumpet, and assorted percussion instruments in their live show that are also used on the album . But what really makes them unique are their lead singers- yes, plural. They have a male and female singer who take turns leading the songs and singing together, which gives their music a rich and interesting sound. The six piece band also had two touring members with them. They’re a really cool group of musicians and I suggest seeing them live.

Austin City Limits Festival Lineup

Festivals, Indie Artists, Pop Artists, Uncategorized

May 3, 2013

With the coming of May means the coming of official ACL announcements. The event is only five short months away, which means it’s time to buy tickets and fan-girl over the lineup. ACL will be announcing the full lineup at 12:01am CST on May 7 and tickets will go on sale the following morning at 10:00am CST.

With the big news just around the corner, many fans and concert goers are getting very excited and have been trading lineup rumors and predictions. But fans aren’t the only ones eager to see the line up.

Early Friday morning, it was discovered that ACL leaked a few bands through their ads in The Chronicle. The bands are FUN., Grouplove, Shovels & Rope, and True Believers. These bands will also be joined by Muse, who spilled the beans about playing the festival earlier.

ACL revealed later that certain bands have been printed on ACL stickers/ napkins/ coozies and have been distributed to restaurants around Austin. The mission is simple: Austintites find leaked band stickers and instagram a photo using the hash tag “#ACLfest”.

So far the bands that have been discovered through this scavenger hunt are Local Natives, My Jerusalem, Neko Case, Shuggie Otis, Portugal the Man, Not In the Face, Smith Westerns, The Joy Formidable, Haim, Junip, and Jake Bugg, with more being discovered every day.

This year ACL expanded to two weekends with identical lineups. ACL also got rid of 1-day passes due to popular demand of 3-day passes. This means you have to whip out 225 big ones if you want to get your hands on a wristband. Visit aclfestival.com for more details.

Five Songs You’ll Love

Indie Artists, New Music, Pop Artists, Pop Punk Artists, Uncategorized

April 21, 2013

1. The Neighbourhood – “Sweater Weather”

The obvious British spelling of the name goes to show that the California native band is anything but average. One of my personal favorite songs at the moment, “Sweater Weather” is a cheeky tune that feels like exactly what their music video shows- young love adventures in California’s sun-kissed summer days with dashing bad boys.

2. twenty | one | pilots – “Holding On To You”

Don’t let the Eminem sound-alike catch you off guard, this isn’t another rapper with a cheesy radio hit. Twenty One Pilots is an extremely energetic duo from Ohio. It’s hard to put a label on this band. Indietronica? Synth-pop? Rap rock? No matter what it is, they do it well. Give them a listen for yourself and see what you think.

3. The 1975 – “Chocolate”

British band The 1975 is taking over the alternative music scene with this addictive song. “Chocolate” is a new take on the bad boy vibe with electrifying pop-y guitar pick-ups that seems to have listeners captivated.

4. New Politics – “Harlem”

“Harlem” is a dancing song if there ever was one. After hearing this song, you’ll probably be as surprised I as was to find out this pop rock trio is from Copenhagen, Denmark, although they currently live in New York, which makes a lot more sense for the song. The band made an appearance at SXSW this year and they are one to keep your eyes out for.

5. Robert DeLong – “Global Concepts”

I first encountered Robert DeLong when he opened for Two Door Cinema Club at Stubb’s on April 10. I had no idea who he was, but after his performance I made sure to add him to my radar. My first reaction to him was that a face-painted Ron Weasley was on stage playing us dub step on a joystick. As weird of a combination as that sounds, it was freaking awesome.  Robert DeLong is part of the new generation that brings their video gaming skills to play- literally- in their music. Watch a part of the madness here.

Andrew McMahon Plays SXSW

Concert Reviews, Indie Artists, Photos, Uncategorized

March 23, 2013

South By Southwest is full of shows and free showcases, so many that it’s hard to keep track of them all. More often than not you’ll hear about showcases from word of mouth, which is how I found out about Andrew McMahon playing a free show on Friday at Whole Foods.  The event was hosted by Quantum Collective and Amazon who had many bands scheduled to play that day, even the famous Rick Springfield who I saw before Andrew McMahon.

There were lots people lounging around on the rooftop of Whole Foods with friends, kids and dogs in tow, all enjoying the live music, free food, and the atmosphere. When Andrew McMahon and his band started setting up people gathered under the pergola to watch him.

Since the end of Jack’s Mannequin and the start of Andrew McMahon touring under his own name, he added several band mates to his live band so that he could have a fuller, more complete live sound. Andrew and his five bands mates packed keyboards, synthesizers, basses, guitars, mics, and all the pedals and wires that go along with it onto a stage that would be considered small even for four people. He began his set about 40 minutes later after all the instruments were sound checked and they got his piano working.

After playing “Television” (Jack’s Mannequin), “Learn to Dance” (new), and “I Woke Up In a Car” (Something Corporate), he started to play his newest song “Synesthesia” but had to cut it because one of the synthesizers stopped working. The thing about SXSW is that everything is spontaneous and problems happen and you just have to keep going. So Andrew finished his set with one of his personal favorite Jack’s songs “Bruised.”

After seeing him at SXSW and again for his show in Dallas I realize how much of a true musician and performer he is. He is so true and real in his music and so genuine when he performs. Andrew McMahon  is something special.

You can read about my one of a kind experience at his show in Dallas and see even more photos by clicking here.

Watch Andrew McMahon’s performance of “Television”.
