Taking Back Sunday Tour Review and Photos

Concert Reviews, Photos, Pop Punk Artists, Uncategorized

February 24, 2015

Taking Back Sunday stopped in Austin, TX at Emo’s on Feb. 20 for a night of high-energy rocking. The Menzingers and letlive. opened the show. Click the photos below to see more of each band or go here.

The Menzingers  have been around since 2006, but are making the rounds in the pop punk scene since the release of their last album Rented World in 2014. They brought the energy to the sold out show, jumping all over stage and getting the crowd pumped up for the night.

The Menzingers

letlive. has been on my bucket list to see for awhile now. I’ve heard stories about their reckless, insane, energetic show, but I was not prepared for the reality of it. Before the first song was over, Jason Butler, vocalist, jumped off stage and made his way through the crowd. Unexpected fans searched for him eagerly, and those lucky enough to be near him screamed along to the song, while others took selfies or watched on with smiles from ear to ear. The rest of the set continued with manic actions from Butler, breaking a lamp on stage and climbing speakers all while fervently singing and screaming lyrics. The rest of the band, feeding off each others’ energy, supported him with solid instrumentals. The set was truly a spectacle that is bound to be unique every night.

Finally it was the time of night fans had been waiting hours for. Taking Back Sunday took the stage and wasted no time to get straight to rocking, which they did a lot of that night. It was clear many of these fans have been waiting a long time to see Taking Back Sunday, who for many, could be called their favorite band. There was not a soul in the crowd who wasn’t singing every word. It is always a pleasure to see a veteran band deliver a performance with precision and passion from years of touring.

Warped Tour in Review: Best of the Bands

Concert Reviews, Festivals, Indie Artists, Photos, Pop Punk Artists, Uncategorized

June 19, 2014

When I think of Warped Tour, I first think of hot, sweaty, long days in the Texas sun. But it’s worth it because the day is spent with five or six favorite bands, and all the fans who love them just as much as you.

I headed out to San Antonio for the second date of Warped Tour to catch all your and my favorite bands. Read about my experience below with some of the best bands on tour. You can also read my survival guide if your date is coming up. All photos from Warped Tour can be seen on my Flickr page.

Yellowcard

My favorite band of the day was Yellowcard, hands down. They rocked out like no other band out there. Ryan Key, vocalist, immediately jumped off the stage and hopped up onto the barrier to get the crowd going, waving his arms in the air and making faces. Yellowcard gave it their 100% and delivered a solid, high-energy set from the first note to the last. Sean Mackin, violinist, might have been even more pumped than Key, screaming and running and jumping around stage, not stoping to pause even for a minute. And the crowd savored every second of it, singing their faces off to the tunes they so closely worship.

Less Than Jake

I was not familiar with much of Less Than Jakes’ music, but, boy, were they fun. Even if you don’t know them, go and see them if you have the time. Their performance skills combined with genuine fun and artistic energy is larger than almost any other artist there.  And who doesn’t love a little brass?

We Are The In Crowd

We Are The In CrowdWATIC has grown a lot in the last few years. They’ve gone from following in the footsteps of The Summer Set and All Time Low, to holding their own on a big stage. Much of their music has that pop-punk-anthem feeling, and you know it when the crowd sings with all their hearts. WATIC was another one of my favorite performances because they spend the whole time running around the stage, giving every part of the crowd some love. Not to mention, vocalist Tay Jardine’s hair flips are something you don’t want to miss.

Echosmith

Echosmith is an up-and-coming indie-rock band from California. The four siblings show their light-hearted and fun-spirited personalities on stage through their music. This was my second time seeing them after SXSW in March, and they’ve only improved as performers. Only 16, Sydney Sierota, vocalist, commands the stage with an elegance beyond her years. On their last song, they released confetti filled balloons, a great show of their character as a band. . These kids are going places.

Jimmy Eat World Photos

Concert Reviews, Photos, Pop Punk Artists, Uncategorized

May 24, 2014

DSC_9045-3Jimmy Eat World came to Stubb’s in Austin, TX on May 18 as the start of a mini U.S. tour.

A band that has been in the game this long is sure to deliver, and that’s exactly what Jimmy Eat World did.

Jimmy Eat World is the 90s band that bridged the gap between punk rock and pop punk, along with Blink 182 and Green Day. Every pop punk band of today probably listened to Jimmy Eat World growing up, one of the pioneers of the genre.

It was clear that the audience, too, grew up listening to the band in their teenage years. Everyone was coming back together with their closest friends to remember the good ol’ days.

The band performed an hour and forty-five minute set with new songs and old songs alike.

Catch the end of their U.S before they head over to Europe for the summer. See tour dates here.

February 16, 2014

Panic! at the Disco made a stop in Austin, TX at Emo’s on Feb. 12 for their Too Weird Tour. The band released a full length album Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die on October 4, 2013.

The show was a high energy, adrenaline-pumped two hour set filled with smoke and lights galore. So much smoke, in fact, that the fire alarm went off and the police showed up.

Brendon Urie’s voice was even more impressive, hitting the highest of notes and even screaming at points during the set. There is no question that Urie is a true performer and talented musician.

Artist Spotlight: BoyMeetsWorld

Pop Punk Artists, Uncategorized

July 31, 2013

When you hear the name BoyMeetsWorld, you’re probably thinking of the 90s television show, but BoyMeetsWorld, the band, is here to change that image. BoyMeetsWorld is an uprising pop punk band from Cincinnati, OH. Racing drums, gang vocals, and guitar riffs give this band something special.

In one year as a band, BoyMeetsWorld has won first place at their tri-state Battle of the Bands, booked and played shows out of town and released their debut EP “Do What’s Best For You.” The band is made up of lead singer Craig Sulken, guitarists Pat Bryant and Drew Richter, bassist Brad Sulken, and drummer Ryan Sulken.

“We decided to start this band because music has always been something every member loves doing, and we really want to have our music heard around the world,” the band said. “It would be insane to know that people all over the place are blaring our music.”

It is apparent through lyrics that BoyMeetsWorld is all about having fun and spending their days making memories with great friends. They describe thier music as  “fun, energetic, and something you’ll love to sing along to in the shower or in the car.”

And it isn’t just an image. They bring this vibe to play in real life, too. When they take the stage their lively performance gets the crowd pumped up. The band’s favorite song to play live is “Right Where We Belong,” a perfect example of what they’re all about.

“It’s the most energetic and everybody sings with us every time we play it…,” BoyMeetsWorld said.

The overall sound and lyrical content of BoyMeetsWorld’s music reminds me of Mayday Parade meets Man Overboard, but their abilities do not stop there.

The band said, “we think our songwriting and live show makes us a little different than other bands in our genre. We think we pack a little bit more of a punch in both aspects.”

Like most bands, BoyMeetsWorld is inspired by the bands they love and listened to growing up like Mest, Good Charlotte, New Found Glory, and Bayside.

Since their start in the summer of 2012, BoyMeetsWorld have grown a lot.

“The best part about being in [BoyMeetsWorld] is definitely all of the people we’ve met and continue to meet,” they said. “We’ve made so many good friends, and love getting to know people and their life stories.”

The band has a lot of plans for the future like playing shows in Cincinnati, hitting the road to play some out of town shows in the fall, and maybe even putting out a new single or EP in the coming months.

BoyMeetsWorld released a music video for “Right Where We Belong”  on July 22. The band’s EP “Do What’s Best For You” is available for purchase on iTunes.

Five Songs You’ll Love

Indie Artists, New Music, Pop Artists, Pop Punk Artists, Uncategorized

April 21, 2013

1. The Neighbourhood – “Sweater Weather”

The obvious British spelling of the name goes to show that the California native band is anything but average. One of my personal favorite songs at the moment, “Sweater Weather” is a cheeky tune that feels like exactly what their music video shows- young love adventures in California’s sun-kissed summer days with dashing bad boys.

2. twenty | one | pilots – “Holding On To You”

Don’t let the Eminem sound-alike catch you off guard, this isn’t another rapper with a cheesy radio hit. Twenty One Pilots is an extremely energetic duo from Ohio. It’s hard to put a label on this band. Indietronica? Synth-pop? Rap rock? No matter what it is, they do it well. Give them a listen for yourself and see what you think.

3. The 1975 – “Chocolate”

British band The 1975 is taking over the alternative music scene with this addictive song. “Chocolate” is a new take on the bad boy vibe with electrifying pop-y guitar pick-ups that seems to have listeners captivated.

4. New Politics – “Harlem”

“Harlem” is a dancing song if there ever was one. After hearing this song, you’ll probably be as surprised I as was to find out this pop rock trio is from Copenhagen, Denmark, although they currently live in New York, which makes a lot more sense for the song. The band made an appearance at SXSW this year and they are one to keep your eyes out for.

5. Robert DeLong – “Global Concepts”

I first encountered Robert DeLong when he opened for Two Door Cinema Club at Stubb’s on April 10. I had no idea who he was, but after his performance I made sure to add him to my radar. My first reaction to him was that a face-painted Ron Weasley was on stage playing us dub step on a joystick. As weird of a combination as that sounds, it was freaking awesome.  Robert DeLong is part of the new generation that brings their video gaming skills to play- literally- in their music. Watch a part of the madness here.

Somewhere In Neverland Music Video

Concert Reviews, Pop Punk Artists, Uncategorized

April 15, 2013

On March 19, All Time Low released a music video for their song “Somewhere In Neverland” from their latest album Don’t Panic.

All Time Low is currently on a co-headliner tour with Pierce the Veil for the Spring Fever Tour. The two bands are accompanied by Mayday Parade and You Me at Six.

The tour kicked off on April 11 in Tulsa, OK before it headed to Texas for a full weekend of shows. I caught up with the tour at the San Antonio date, and it was clear that the bands are having a great time, calling this “the best tour ever.”

Make sure to catch this tour as they make their way across the United States. Dates can be found here.
